The poem below was inspired by the movie Shakespeare in Love... sort of, anyway.

Lamp of song

Love too long denied
Has fled before the siren’s song
Battered and beguiled
Wondering where it went wrong

Slumbering heart, will wake no more
Life’s line is short, heart’s line broken
From him flowed no token
No loving word ever spoken

But faith lingers maddeningly
It will not let the light go out
How long can she go on?
Deafened by the siren’s song

No other suitors’ word
Can penetrate the wall of sound
No tears, no touch, no sacred gift
Can turn her heart from him

She waits now, only for the blissful night
When finally the lamp goes dark
When finally the bird does not whisper
Songs of promises veiled and lingering glances

Bring on the night
I grow weary of the light
